Every winter brings with it a predictable amount of snow, ice, and all around bad weather. Fortunately, if your feet are clad in the traditional yet comfortable shoes made for over two hundred years by the Birkenstock family business in Germany, you’ll survive quite nicely. In fact, any time of the year is a good time to slip into these attractive shoes when you are out and about. Not only are they comfortable and stylish, but they are also environmentally friendly. When they wear out, which takes a long time, their all-natural products are perfectly qualified to be recycled. But how did we Americans come by these wonderful German-made shoes?
First created in 1774 in a small German village by Johann Birkenstock, a shoemaker with a simple design, the shoes were later adjusted to fit the contours of the human foot. Because making each shoe that way would be too expensive, Konrad Birkenstock, another relative designed an insert that could simply be placed in each shoe at the factory. This wonderful German secret stayed locked in Germany until the mid-1900s when an American visitor, Margot Fraser fell in love with them. She purchased the exclusive rights to bring them to United States and sell them out of her California home. Today there are over 400 styles of this wonderful line of shoes and each one offers the Birkenstock trademark comfort, style, and eco-friendly design.
