If you are a member of the nursing profession, you already know that your feet are one of your most valuable assets. You need them everyday, all day, sometimes for extended shifts. When they are in pain, your day becomes incredibly more difficult, and “service with a smile” becomes almost impossible. Because you need to protect your most valuable assets, you need to take good care of your feet. Buying quality nursing shoes is a must for good foot care. Saving a little money by purchasing cheap nursing shoes may endanger both your personal safety as well the health of your feet, actually costing you more money in the long run.
Whether you work in a hospital, a clinic, a doctor’s office, or a care facility, everyone knows that you rarely sit down. You are on your feet for most of your shift. That’s just the nature of a care-giving job. Cheap nursing shoes can put you at risk in several ways. Slipping on water or other spilled liquids can result in nasty falls that may debilitate you, or worse yet, hurt a patient that you may be assisting. Poor quality, slippery soles will not protect from such falls. Furthermore, cheap nursing shoes may not be made of protective materials, thus allowing everything from needles to hazardous materials to penetrate directly, infecting your foot. Think of all the toxic germs on the floor. You do not want to have your feet exposed to them in the course of the day.
Beyond the need to protect your feet from outside dangers, there is the concern about the quality of the footwear itself affecting you. Cheap nursing shoes may not have enough toe room for you. They may not conform to the shape of your foot causing misalignment and overall body discomfort. If your shoes are too stiff and do not have enough give, they can quickly cause your feet to become very painful. Some cheap shoes have too large a heel, which makes walking cumbersome and tiring.
Many nurses today are choosing to wear clogs if their hospital dress code allows. Again, cheap nursing shoes, clogs or otherwise, can be a detriment to one’s foot health. If you have weak ankles, most poorly made shoes lack the support you need for your constant walking. Good shoes will offer support, extra padding for sensitive soles, and shock absorption. They will be easy to put on and clean easily as well. Good shoes will wear well, last longer, and leave you feeling less exhausted at the end of your shift. They are definitely worth the investment.
