When most of us need shoes, getting them is a simple matter of going to a store that sells shoes or browsing online until you find a pair in the style, color and size that you want. For others, shopping for shoes is a much more difficult ordeal. If you have exceptionally large or small feet, feet of different sizes, or a physical problem that dictates what sort of shoes you wear, buying a new pair of shoes presents a challenge.
With widespread use of the internet, procuring shoes that are a little different in size or design is not as difficult as it once was. However, most people who can run out and buy a pair of sneakers or a pair to match a particular outfit take that ability for granted. If you wear a size 15 or must wear special shoes due to a painful back problem, then buying shoes is not convenient and can be costly. In those cases, you must plan ahead and do some research to look for what you need.
If you have a medical condition such as fallen arches or diabetes that requires special care for your feet, you may be able to get orthopedic inserts for your shoes, and just need to purchase shoes that provide adequate support. In that case, you probably do not need to shop at a specialty shoe store. However, if you have feet of different sizes, you may need to seek out a retailer that sells shoes of mismatched sizes. A half-size difference in feet is not terribly unusual, but can certainly be uncomfortable if you fit the smaller foot.
Some retailers will let you order split sized pairs, although there may be a fee for the service. The fee may well be less than the cost of another pair of shoes. There are also online shoe trading sites that might be a good route.
Sufferers of back pain often need special shoes to help ease the pain, as do those who have diabetes. If you have specific footwear needs due to a medical issue, your doctor may write a prescription for your shoes, or you may just be advised to shop at a retailer that specializes in orthotics. Although you may envision ugly, clunky shoes when you think of orthotics, strides have been made in bringing style to these specialized shoes. You can’t get super-sexy orthotic high heels but you can get nice shoes in a variety of colors, styles and materials that may help ease your pain.
People with very large or very small feet probably have an easier time shopping for shoes than those with medical conditions that dictate footwear or people with different sized feet. Women who have small feet want the same thing that women with average-sized feet want: shoes that fit, are stylish and are comfortable. Many of the larger shoe retailers carry very small sizes and for sneakers, many women buy boys’ shoes. A quick Google search for “very large shoe sizes” immediately brings up many retailers that specializes in stylish shoes for people with bigger than average feet.
